Photographic narrative

Narrative can be conveyed in many different ways within media, most commonly recognised through the use of text and video. Within this task we were told to specifically focus on the use of images to create a narrative that could be easily understood. Due to the lack of pre-warning for this task we were all told to use the cameras on our iPads, therefore not focusing on the quality of the images but instead their content. We were advised not to use editing, however after proceeding to our idea we decided that it was vital in order to create the narrative in a manner that could be understood easily. As a group we chose to focus on psychophrenia, or the concept of someone possibly having it. We all took basic images of a models face and then adapted them with use of other simple images taken around the university. In order to suggest the effect of mental illness and the trauma it can cause, we chose to use filters and layering with the use of the range of images to create the effect desired. The use of multiple images of the face and other items, that could suggest thoughts, help to imply a battle with the mind. At the end of the session we present our range of images, showing a development of madness within the photographs as we progressed, and asked the class to guess what they believed our narrative to be based on. Hints within the images did help, but the majority quite easily guessed mental illness or psychophrenia, we resulting won a prize for having the best images and conveying a narrative most effectively. I have attached the three images that I contributed to the set below.

Sustainability and Sustainable design

Sustainable design is the idea of creating and designing physical objects, the built environment, and services to comply to the principles of social, economic and ecological sustainability. The concept and promotion of sustainable design has increased in recent years particularly in the electronics market, due to the increasingly competitive nature of the products.  Two products that are the same, however one is made from sustainable and environmentally friendly materials, you buy the sustainable option right?

Triptychs: Other mediums

Triptychs are most commonly though of as still images, however they can also be formed through other mediums.

Here is an abstract example of triptych using the medium of film created by multiple still images:

Here is an example of a film triptych using three separately shot movies. The film is an advertisement for the Diesel brand, ‘Only the Brave’, possibly used to represent the brave nature of both the advertisement and brand.

A triptych is a work of art which is divided into 3 sections, formed of mainly either photographs, paintings or carvings. The centre image of the 3 panels is typically the largest, however it isn’t uncommon for all the panels to be of the same size. The images used within a triptych are designed so they can be viewed separately or as an entire image.

A triptych, in the photographic form, can be separated into 3 images after a single image has been taken, or they can be individually taken prior to forming the triptych. A triptych can be formed by hand, traditionally, using scissors and possibly a back panel or it could be generated through the use of photoshop.

The Petrified Forest

ImageBackground information

The Petrified Forest, or Petrified Forest National Park, is a United States national park in Navajo and Apache counties in northeastern Arizona.

Parts of the Petrified Forest are declared as a national monument, known for the vast amount of fossils and fallen trees that lived in the late triassic. The national monument sectors of the forest spread into the Painted Desert, which gets its name from the colourful chinle formation within the desert. Fossils within the forest and desert have also sometimes been derived from the late triassic period, having included numerous plants, largely ferns and cycads, and also large amphibians and early dinosaurs.

The park’s earliest human inhabitance arrived around 8,000 years ago but most abandoned the area in around 1400CE due to an increasing climate.

In modern times the petrified wood has been used to home train lines, mostly for freight trains, and a parallel highway US Route 66, which was later decommissioned in 1985. Theft of petrified wood within the forest remains a common problem in the 21st century. The forest is also refered to as the ‘Forest made of stone’. A number of species still inhabit the forest.

Possible narrative

Story or Film: Due to the continuing problem of theft of Petrified wood within the forest I derived the idea of a thief who encounters more than he expects when committing the crime. Due to the name ‘The Forest Made of Stone’ it inspires the idea that there could possibly be a species made of stone, possibly more than one species. The thief, a single father of two children from suburbia, is stealing the wood to gain money to help support his children. Upon encountering the unknown stone species he is initially scared and frightened, attempting to fight them away, however a Navajo tribes man could offer help, advising that the stone species are friendly. This story could continue to creating friendship between the man and the navajo tribesman in attempt to gain knowledge of the species. As the film develops it could develop a distinctly ‘Disney’ style moral about judging others and how friendship can develop in a number of ways.
